Citadel Paints Are Changing… But Not in the Way You Think

If you’ve been browsing our paint range recently, you might have noticed something a little different. Some of the familiar Citadel Colour pots are starting to look… well, less Citadel and more Warhammer. And if you’re anything like us, your first thought was probably: “Hang on, are they changing the paints?”

Good news – they’re not.

Games Workshop has begun rebranding its well-known Citadel Colour range into Warhammer Colour, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: a fresh name and updated packaging, not a change to the paints themselves.

Same Paints, Same Colours, Same Results

Let’s get straight to the part that matters most.

Nothing about the paint inside the pot has changed.

You’re still getting the same formulas, the same smooth application and the same finish you’ve come to expect from Citadel over the years. Your existing colour schemes will match perfectly, your recipes still work and your armies will look exactly how you intended.

The entire range remains untouched – including:

Whether you’re edge highlighting power armour, glazing subtle transitions or batch painting an entire force, your process stays exactly the same.

Why the Change from Citadel to Warhammer?

At first glance, it might feel like an unnecessary change – Citadel has been a staple name in the hobby for years.

But the reasoning is fairly straightforward.

The new name, Warhammer Colour, makes it instantly clear what the paints are for. For newer hobbyists especially, there’s no confusion – these are paints designed specifically for Warhammer miniatures.

It also reflects a broader shift from GW, with more of the hobby being unified under the Warhammer brand as has been ongoing for many years now. It’s less about changing anything fundamental and more about creating a clearer more consistent identity across the range of products.

Why You’re Seeing a Mix of Old and New Stock

If you’ve noticed some pots still labelled Citadel and others now showing Warhammer please don’t worry – that’s completely normal.

The transition is happening gradually, which means:

  • Older Citadel-labelled stock is still being sold
  • New deliveries are arriving with Warhammer branding
  • Both versions will coexist for a while

As stock rotates, the older packaging will naturally phase out, leaving the new Warhammer-labelled pots as the standard going forward.

What This Means for You as a Hobbyist

In practical terms, very little has changed – and that’s a good thing.

  • Your favourite paints are still available
  • Colour names remain the same
  • Tutorials and guides still apply
  • Your collection stays fully compatible

Whether it says Citadel or Warhammer on the label, the paint inside is identical.

A New Name, the Same Hobby We Love

For many hobbyists, the Citadel name carries a lot of nostalgia. It’s been part of the Warhammer experience for years, sitting on hobby desks all over the world.

But at the end of the day, what matters most hasn’t changed: the quality of the paints and the results you achieve on your miniatures.

So while the label might look a bit different, the experience of painting your army remains exactly the same.
