Warhammer Colour: Shade Nuln Oil 18ml

Nuln Oil Shade 18ml from Warhammer Colour adds deep, natural-looking shadows to your miniatures by flowing into recesses and around sculpted details. This versatile dark shade is particularly useful for defining metallic armour, weapons, machinery, chainmail and other areas that need greater depth.

It is one of those paints that quickly earns a permanent place on the painting desk. Applied over silver metallics, Nuln Oil darkens the recesses and helps separate individual plates, links and mechanical components. It can also bring definition to darker armour, cloth, stone and neutral colours without requiring every shadow to be painted individually.

This 18ml pot comes in the new Warhammer Colour branding, replacing the previous Citadel Colour presentation.

Using Nuln Oil Shade paint

Apply Nuln Oil over a completely dry basecoat, using your brush to guide the paint into the recesses and around raised details. Shade paints are designed to flow, so work with a controlled amount and check the model for any unwanted pools before leaving it to dry.

For silver armour, weapons and machinery, apply Nuln Oil over the metallic base colour to deepen the gaps between panels, rivets and moving parts. Once it has dried, you can return to the raised surfaces with the original metallic colour, leaving the darker shade visible in the recesses.

Nuln Oil also works well for panel lines, folds of dark cloth, stone textures and other areas where you want stronger separation between details. Apply it across the whole area for an overall shaded finish, or place it directly into selected recesses when you want greater control.

Allow the shade to dry fully before adding further layers or highlights. Building the effect gradually makes it easier to control the depth of the shadows while keeping the surrounding colour clear.

Supplied in an 18ml pot. The water-based formula allows brushes to be cleaned with water after use.
